Dr. Stefan M. Pasiakos is a Nutritional Physiologist and Deputy Chief of the Military Nutrition Division at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine

He is an internationally-recognized expert in human muscle physiology, dietary protein, and amino acid metabolism. He leads a multi-disciplinary research program to define protein requirements and develop targeted dietary and pharmacological strategies that sustain health-readiness and enhance performance for service members.

His academic interests include regulatory mechanisms of human muscle protein turnover, bioenergetics of exercise metabolism, performance nutrition, and the role of dietary protein in human health and disease.

Dr. Pasiakos received his Ph.D. in Nutritional Science in 2008 from the University of Connecticut. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, recipient of the Vernon R Young International Award for Amino Acid Research, member of the International Protein Board, Deputy Editor for the British Journal of Nutrition, and editorial board member for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

History

The George Liepa Sigma XI Speaker Series Endowed Fund was established in 2011 in memory of Dr. George Liepa [PDF]. George was an active campus member of Sigma Xi, a professor of human nutrition and a department head in the College of Health and Human Services.

When the Graduate Research Fair was created, it was his idea to have a science-related speaker present at the end of the day. George secured funding from Sigma Xi National to start the event and was a key figure in helping to select the annual speaker as well as marketing the event to EMU students, faculty and local high schools.
